AACT Summer Content Writing Team:
The Chemistry of Photography and Imaging
We are excited to host a content writing team for K-12 teachers of chemistry during the summer of 2024. Current and retired teachers are encouraged to apply! Participants will create one unique lesson plan that is related to the theme, The Chemistry of Photography and Imaging. Selected participants will earn $600 for their participation.

Guidelines

  • Be an AACT member. Not a member? Join now!
  • Be a current K–12 teacher of chemistry! (Including K–5 science teachers, 6–8 physical science teachers, and 9–12 chemistry teachers).
  • Submit your lesson plan idea through the application form below, by Sunday, June 9, 2024.
  • Attend a short teleconference with AACT staff during the week of June 17th.
  • Be willing and able to meet deadlines.
  • Be available for participation (virtually) June 17th – August 5, 2024.
Lesson Plan Details

As part of this application, you are required to summarize your idea for an original lesson plan related to the theme, the chemistry of photography and imaging. Lesson plans should meet the following requirements:

  • The lesson is clearly connected to a grade-level appropriate chemistry concept.
  • The lesson contains more than one component (for example, it could begin with a literacy component, followed by a lab experience.)
  • The lesson should be designed to be completed in no more than 100 minutes of contact time.
  • The lesson should be unique and authentic (please be sure to check the AACT Classroom Resource Library to make sure your idea hasn't been previously published)!
  • Lesson plans cannot be created based on the use of a pre-made chemistry kit sold by a Scientific Education supply company.

Chemistry Connections

There are many applications of photography and imaging in chemistry including:

  • Exposure and development of images
  • Photochemistry and light sensitive materials
  • Color-sensitive materials and dyes
  • Medical imaging
  • Food quality control (spectroscopy)
  • Forensic chemistry
  • Environmental chemistry
Teachers interested in this opportunity may submit more than one entry for consideration. If selected, you will create a full lesson plan, using the AACT template for the specific idea described in your application.

Any questions can be directed to aact@acs.org.
